Littleport Town Res 1 - 6 West Row Gunners

SWEEPER Gavin Wells stole the limelight for the West Row Gunners at the weekend after claiming a hatrick in their 6-1 win over Littleport Town Reserves .

After surviving an early scare from the league's basement side, the Gunners had the perfect opportunity to go one up when left wing back Sam Low was brought down in the Littleport area. However, Richard Hamill failed to put away the resulting spot kick seeing his effort superbly saved by the Littleport keeper.

Not letting the miss go to their heads, the Gunners took the lead mid way through the first half when Shaun Smith tapped in a long-range effort spilled by the hosts' keeper.

One up, the Gunners started to take control of the game and doubled their lead when Wells finished off a good solo run by burying the ball past the Littleport keeper.

Although two goals to the good West Row were not at their best. Worries of a comeback from the home side were put at ease when Graham Clark slotted home from six yards out on the hour mark. Minutes later and Wells claimed his second of the game when thumping home a shot on the underside of the cross bar.

With 15 minutes to go Wells sealed his hatrick when finishing off some neat work by the Gunners midfield. It was then a case of going from hero to villain as the makeshift sweeper needlessly brought down a Littleport player in the area. The hosts took the chance with open hands and grabbed what was to be a consolation goal.

West Row rounded off their goal fest when Ashley Smith somehow prodded the ball past the Cambridgeshire side's keeper with just minutes to play, giving the Gunners their fourth victory.

West Row Gunners 4 - 0 Great Chesterton

West Row Gunners kept their strong end of the season form going with a comfortable 4 - 0 win over great Chesterford on Thursday night.

The home side got the ball rolling after 20 minutes when right wing back Shaun Smith latched on to a well judged through ball from Craig Harrison, before smartly slotting the ball past the visiting keeper.

Minutes later and the lead was doubled when David Rose was on hand to nod home the following corner swung in from the right.

Although two up, the Gunners were thankful for keeper Phillip Taylor who produced a smart (small) one-handed save to keep the scoreline in tact.

The Gunners responded to the pressure in the best possible fashion when Daniel Bradnam-Alecock made it 3-0 just before half time when tucking away a flick on by Ashley Smith.

Mid way through the second half West Row once again had to call on the services of Taylor who somehow tipped over a fiercely struck shot to keep the score at 3 - 0.

After both sides were reduced to 10 men. West Row finally made the game safe five minutes form time when Ashley Smith thumped home a cross swung in from the left hand side, sealing the points for the Gunners.

West Row Gunners 3, Saffron Crocus 2

A LAST gasp own goal kept the West Row Gunners slim Kershaw Senior B promotion hopes alive on Saturday when beating Saffron Crocus 3-2.

Looking to gain their first win in three games, the Gunners got off to a bad start when the visitors took the lead after just 10 minutes.

A free kick from the left was swung into the hosts' area and despite efforts to clear the danger, the ball was headed into the net by a visiting striker.

The goal was the wake up call the Gunners needed as they took charge of the game with Daniel Bradnam-Alecock, Shaun Smith and Gavin Wells all having good opportunities to make the game all square.

The pressure finally paid off when goos work in midfield saw Craig Harrison drill home the ball to level the game.

Minutes later, Mark Hacking nearly made it 2-1 to the Gunners but his dipping shot sailed just over the bar.

After the break it was the visitors who looked the sharper, despite being on the back foot since taking the lead but they failed to threaten Richard Hamill in the West Row net.

Saffron Crocus restored their lead on the 65th minute when a through ball, which caught out the West Row defence, was tucked away to make it 2-1.

The Gunners soon levelled the match again, thanks to Hacking who thumped home a header from a couple of yards out.

West Row hopes of gaining a winner looked to be dashed when centre-back Jim Morley received his marching orders for his second yellow card following a poorly timed challenge.

But with just two minutes remaining, the 10 men secured the three points when a long ball pumped into the Crocus area caused confusion between goalkeeper and defender, forcing the backpedalling centre-half to turn the ball into his own net.

Message from an old WRG Legend

Aloha from Hawaii

Great to see the "same ol faces" on this site. For those of you who don't know me, I was a Gooner in the 90's.

I was known for getting in the box as often as I could. I just had a knack for getting in and out without anyone tracking me. I wasn 't one of the better players of course but it didn't seem to matter.....I f**king scored every weekend.

I still play over here in Hawaii although I 'm not as prolific as I used to be. Don't get me wrong, I'm still getting in the right positions and I do score from time to time, but more often than not I'm just hitting the bar.

Anyway, thanks for the blast from the past. And, if you should ever put together a West Row Gunners Ladies Team please keep me in mind for the Physio position.....I'm not a gynacholgist or anything....but I'll have a f**king good look at it for them!

COME ON BORO!
